Sailing School

Sailing holidays in Croatia are increasing in popularity, as more tourists investigate the country's legendary coastline and associated islands. One of the most popular destinations is the island of Hvar, close to Split, which has plenty of bays and coves to discover, as well as an array of smaller islands to sail around.

One holiday option is to enroll in a sailing course on Hvar, a perfect way to improve sailing skills while enjoy a break one of the ten most beautiful islands in the world, according to readers of Conde Nast.

Hvar Adventure Sailing School

Sailing courses are offered by local activity specialist Hvar Adventure, who have been providing active sporting holidays for tourists on the islands since 2005. With the nearby Pakleni Islands offering an excellent training ground, the sailing school offers three types of course: elementary, advanced and offshore.

Elementary Sailing Course

The beginner's sailing course is a comprehensive, all-inclusive sailing course based out of Hvar Town. The basic essentials of sailing are taught, including theory, navigation skills, aerodynamics, safety on board and how to manoeuvre the boat with both engine and sails.

The course is very practical and hands-on, and includes a day of sailing to the neighbouring island of Vis. The final day involves testing the skills learned during the course, and diplomas are awarded at the farewell dinner.

Advanced Sailing Course

The advanced course is designed for people with some good sailing experience under their belt and focuses on developing skills to improve sailing speeds. Skills such as how to best trim the sails and the responsibilities of each person on the boat are covered, while an interesting inclusion in the course is the opportunity to sail in one of the many regattas on the Adriatic.

Offshore Sailing Course

More experienced sailors may be interested in the offshore sailing course offered by Hvar Adventure and run by Sime Stipanicev, the first Croatian skipper to sail in Mini Transat, the solo race across the Atlantic. The actual course will be held on the high seas between Malta, Lampedusa and Tunis.

The courses are designed to help participants gain their licences, and the company can help to prepare clients for the theory and practical tests in obtaining a skipper licence with the Split Port Authority.

Sailing options are of course not only limited to those taking sailing courses, and there is a wide variety of boat rental options, while the main marina in Vrboska is also a hive of nautical activity.
