Fishing off Hvar: Deep Sea, Octopus, Night Snorkelling

For an island surrounded with the rich and abundant Adriatic, I have always been surprised at the lack of fishing options for tourists. Several people have contacted me asking about big game fishing? Perhaps some organised octopus or squid fishing?

Although I had heard of the occasional fishing opportunity, there was nothing readily available for tourists as a concrete offer.  Or nothing that I could find while researching for my guidebook.  All that changed last week when I met Mate (pronounced Ma-tay).

An 'incomer' like myself - although he has not travelled quite as far, just from the next island of Vis - Mate is the answer to many people's fishing desires, and his comprehensive offer includes deep sea fishing, squid and octopus fishing, day and night snorkelling, boat transfers and excursions to places such as the Blue Cave (check out the video below).

Deep Sea Fishing

In his own words...

We offer fishing trips aboard our boat, the "Palagruža". As the name suggests, the boat is strong, robust, elegant and invincible, just like the most remote Croatian island, Palagruža.

The fishing trips are lead by a professional fisherman with years of experience. In our diverse fishing activities we use a number of tools and techniques, such as longlines, nets, traps, hooks, big game fishing, middle game fishing.

The fish caught during the trip remains on board. It is possible to arrange the preparation of fish delicacies on board (requires approval of the skipper), to purchase the fish or to arrange to store it in one of the restaurants in Hvar.

- Price for a full day's trip is 500/600 EUR a day, depending on the season.
- Price for half a day's trip is 300/400 EUR a day, depending on the season.

The price includes: guidance by an experienced skipper, fuel, drinks, fishing permits, appropriate bait, and fishing equipment – rods and reels (class 50/class 80 and 30 lbs).

To get a flavour of big game fishing, Croatia style, check out the Big Game Fishing Championships 2011 in Komiza on Mate's home island of Vis - he was also there.

Squid, Octopus, Night Snorkelling, Transfers and Excursions

Have a look at Mate's website to see what else is available - there is a lot! From the relatively simple squid and octopus fishing and boat transfers, to night snorkelling and all-inclusive excursions such as the one in the video below.  A supremely nice guy offering an excellent service from various feedback we have received.
