Hvar, a Magnet for Special Agents and 007 Bond Girls
Could Hvar be the perfect location for a Bond movie? Imagine the car chases through the Pitve tunnel, along the hairy road to Sucuraj; the romantic trysts in secluded coves on the Pakleni islands; and the sophisticated socialising at Carpe Diem and Restaurant Gariful on one of Europe's most stylish waterfronts. Perhaps.
In reality however, the island is popular with the cast of the iconic British spy series, and at least three James Bonds (and possibly more - Mr. Bond does not always announce his arrival...) - Pierce Brosnan, Daniel Craig and Sean Connery - have visited the island, according to information shared with us by the tourist board.
There have been Bond girls too, including Michelle Yeoh (pictured above on the Hvar riva with partner Jean Todt), who played Wai Lin in Tomorrow Never Dies. The couple stayed on their private yacht in 2010, enjoying a fish extravaganza prepared by Gariful, but served up on the small eco-islet of Galesnik opposite the town.
Gemma Arterton, who played a leading role in the 2008 Quantum of Solace, also chilled out on Hvar. In an article for the Guardian, she described how being on Hvar was a better Bond moment than actually acting in the film:
The hotel organised a small boat, and we were met at the harbour by a rock'n'roll pirate, complete with bandanna, hooped earrings and Aerosmith blaring from the boat's speakers. He asked what music we liked. "Rock'n'roll!" Pippa and I chimed, which he happily played loudly as we tore through the waves to an unknown destination. I once played a Bond Girl in an actual Bond film, but this was the most Bond moment of my life: lying bikini-clad at the front of a boat with the wind in my hair, and feeling very bad-ass to boot.
Of course another great reason for the Bond stars to come to Hvar would be to hone their fitness and adrenaline levels, and where better than under the wing of Hvar Adventure?
