Dubokovic Plavac Mali 2718 Hours of Sun: Here's November's!
Hvar's year-round sunshine contributes to a great wine
The wines of Hvar are earning increasing international attention, with the wineries of Plenkovic, Tomic and Caric leading the way.
One winemaker who is also very sought out by those in the know is Ivo Dubokovic, who has been described as Croatia's leading 'garage' winemaker, a derogatory term coined by the snobbish (and perhaps slightly threatened) wine houses of Bordeaux to describe “ambitious young wine newcomers without vineyard and the land.”
One wine not to miss is his uniquely-named "2718", a deep Plavac Mali red which affords the drinker an opportunity to experience what it is like to taste wines whose grapes have enjoyed 2718 hours of sunshine on the Adriatic's sunniest island.
These pictures were taken at the excellent Me and Mrs Jones waterfront in Jelsa in late November, demonstrating that the Hvar sun is available all year. Jones has an extensive wine list of some of the best wines on the island, and is a pleasant spot to sit and sample the wines of Hvar, even in November (see video below - pics by Miranda Milicic Bradbury).
